Lakota Elders, Warriors Demand Action from U.S. Congress on Ongoing Abuses

Unlawful Elder Abuse of Lakota Elders Continues Funded by U.S. Tax Dollars

WHAT: Press Conference

WHO: Lakota Strong Heart Warrior Society of the Independent Lakota Nation and supporters

WHERE: In front of the Dirksen Senate Building, Washington DC

WHEN: Tuesday January 12, 4:00pm or immediately following the meeting with US Congressional officials

Washington DC – On Tuesday afternoon, the Strong Heart Okolakiciye of the Independent Lakota Nation has a critical meeting with South Dakota members/staff of the U.S. Congress and officials from the U.S. Health and Human Services regarding the crisis in the Porcupine Elderly Meals Program on Pine Ridge. Strong Heart is in Washington at the request of Porcupine elders to end the abuse in their meals program and remove it from corrupt Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) control.

A press conference will be held following this meeting in front of the Dirksen Senate Building or in the adjacent park at approximately 4:00pm. A small vigil for Lakota elders and warriors will be held outside the Dirksen Building while the meeting is ongoing.

Grassroots Lakota elders, among the remaining traditional and language speaking elders, continue to be subjected to abusive, racist, and inhuman conditions in the Elderly Meals Program administered by officials within the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs supported Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) which is causing elders to go without food, eat unhealthy food, and fear for their health and safety. Critical funds for the program are being stolen and diverted. Elders have been threatened with arrest, threatened with removal to mental health facilities, and fear OST blacklisting from medical services necessary for life like dialysis. Their advocate has been fired from her job in Elderly Meals and faced retaliatory abuse by corrupt OST officials.

In 2011, these same elders from the Porcupine Elderly Meals Program occupied the meal’s building for 34 days in protest to the same abusive and genocidal conditions! Despite media attention and multiple meetings with U.S. officials, the Obama Administration has done little to nothing to stop this behavior despite millions in U.S. tax dollars being spent to fund the corrupt OST system.   U.S tax dollars fund the abuse of traditional Lakota elders.

“Our elders are giving the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs one last chance to correct the continuing abuses in the program,” explained Cante Tenza warrior leader Canupa Gluha Mani. “They have instructed us to come to Washington DC and hold these officials accountable for allowing U.S. tax dollars to fund illegal and immoral elder abuse.”

WE NEED YOUR SOLIDARITY AND PRESENCE!

Grassroots elders continue to be subjected to continue to abusive, racist, and inhuman conditions in the Elderly Meals program by officials within the U.S. BIA supported Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) which is causing elders to go without food, eat unhealthy food, and fear for their health and safety. Critical funds for the program are being stolen and diverted. Elders have been threatened with arrest, threatened with removal to mental health facilities, and fear OST blacklisting from essential medical services like dialysis. Their advocate has been fired from her job in Elderly Meals and faced retaliatory abuse by corrupt OST officials.

This is the same Elderly Meals program that faced a 34 day occupation in 2011 in resistance to the same abusive and genocidal conditions! The U.S. has done little to nothing to stop this behavior despite MILLIONS IN US TAX DOLLARS being spent to fund this corrupt system.

THESE CONDITIONS MUST END!

Please join us on Tuesday afternoon and let them know the grassroots Lakota elders are not alone. PIlamaya! Hoka Hey!
